Garden Tables – The Perfect Spot To Start Off Your Vegetables For The Year

Tuesday April 20, 2010

Yes it is that time again where gardeners up and down the country are starting to grow their vegetables for the year ahead from seed. Depending on what you want to grow, some things need to be started off indoors. Tomato plants are a good example as they need a warm windowsill in order to start sprouting into proper plants.

But when it comes to planting things directly in the garden you will find that having a good sized garden table can come in very useful indeed.

This is definitely the case when you are planting out items in troughs and you find it difficult to kneel down constantly. You can sit the bag of compost by your side – or even sit it on a garden chair – and then transfer it in handfuls or pots into the trough as you have it sitting on the table.

You can then lay your packets of seeds out on the table and drop them into the spaces you have made for them in the compost. It is much easier doing it in this way as you can benefit from the height of the table. Once you have covered the seeds over you can lift the trough down onto the floor and set it in your chosen spot. You just have to be mindful of the weight of the trough once you have filled it, although lightweight plastic ones shouldn’t present you with a problem.

It is also much nicer to relax and take your time over planting when you are sitting at your garden table, rather than kneeling on the floor all the time. You will feel a lot more comfortable and you are less likely to have backache or knee ache as a result.

We tend to think of garden tables as somewhere to have meals in the summer. But as you can see they are useful in other ways too. You will probably want to make some little signs or markers to indicate which plants are in which trough as well, and this task is certainly made easier by the fact you are sitting at your table.

So don’t forget all the uses your table has when you are thinking about getting outside to plant your own vegetables this year. It might be worth buying a brand new table and christening it in this rather nice way, mightn’t it?
