If you don’t you definitely should. When the weather is good it will give you a break from your home office, if you work at home. The fresh air is actually a great incentive to get more work done – it doesn’t always detract from doing what you should be doing!
But if you are going to get outside to do some work, you need to make sure you are properly prepared for it. For starters if you have computer work to do you will need a laptop to take out there with you. And it should have a decent battery as well, since trailing a power lead outside isn’t a particularly good or practical idea.
Secondly if you need the internet you should get wireless broadband installed. You should find that you can happily sit at your garden table and get a good signal while using your laptop there.
It helps to make sure you have everything else you need close at hand too when you are thinking of working in the garden. So before you sit down to start work, do a quick mental check to make sure you have all the paperwork, files and pens you will need. Some paperweights will come in handy too, unless there is no wind at all – the last thing you want to be doing is chasing your work up the garden path!
It shouldn’t all be hard work though, and if it is particularly warm make sure you take a drink outside with you. Not alcohol though, as it will impair your reasoning and your ability to work. A cool soft drink is best, to ensure you don’t get dehydrated.
For the same reasons it is a good idea to make sure you are sitting underneath some shade. It doesn’t matter whether it is a gazebo, an awning or an umbrella that fits through the middle of the table. Just be sure that you aren’t sitting in direct sun. If you are working you may not notice your skin starting to get warm and burn – and you don’t want to have problems and discomfort from having been sunburned while you work.
As you can see a garden table has many uses – and arguably one of the best is as a temporary workstation. After all, if you can work from home why not enjoy the best of it as much as you can?
