A Floral Arrangement For Your Garden Table

Monday June 14, 2010

We don’t tend to think too much about putting flowers or plants on our garden tables. But in reality we should spend some time thinking up some good arrangements to use in this situation. It can make all the difference between having a simple garden table and having a real focal point to draw in the eye.

The size of the display you do will depend on how big your garden table is. For example if you only have a tiny two seater table – something like a bistro table for example – you shouldn’t do anything hugely extravagant. If you do you won’t end up with any room to sit down and enjoy a coffee in the mornings.

What you can do is to think about getting a nice terracotta pot to start with, based on the size of the table you have. Remember that the pot is ideally going to be the same shape as the table. A round table does well with a round pot, and if you have a long table that seats lots of people, why not look for something oblong in nature?

Once you have your pot you need to think about what to plant in it. Remember not to add too many plants, as they will all grow to fill it up anyway. Putting in too much to begin with is a classic mistake made by many beginners, so you should be sure you don’t do this.

It’s a good idea to think about what aromas the plants will give off as well. The best way to go is with plants that have a subtle aroma rather than an overpowering one. If they are too strong it could put you off your meal as you sit at the table and eat your lunch or dinner.

Another option you could go for is to grow a herb garden on your garden table. If you think about it this is actually a really good idea. When you serve up dinner to your guests, you can encourage them to add some fresh – truly fresh – herbs to it as they wish. A sprig of parsley for decoration, some chopped chives added to a baked potato with butter… or perhaps even some mint to add to the fresh lamb you are serving. It all adds another degree of entertainment to your meal – and makes it all the more memorable as well.
